The system we design for your home will be hydrostatically tested at 200 psi for a duration of 2 hours. Leaving very little chance the sprinkler head will leak or go off unexpectedly.
If there is a fire, only the sprinkler heads over the fire will activate as sprinkler heads are heat activated and the temperature has to reach 135 degrees. If smoke is present, but no heat, the sprinkler will not activate. Automatic fire sprinkler systems use less water than the fire department would use and sprinklers respond immediately . . . saving precious valuables that may be destroyed waiting for the fire department to arrive.

Standpipes
A standpipe is like a fire hydrant for an individual building. It often entails an extensive parallel plumbing system that comes into use only in case of a fire. In New York City, standpipes are fed by the city water system and include a central pipe (painted red) that typically rises up through a building’s internal stairwell. Often this central pipe will have valves on different floors for firefighter hose hookups. At times water pressure is an issue, so the street fixture provides a way for the fire department to connect a pump truck.

FDNY Mandated Inspection & Testing
The FDNY adopts the NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems.
These requirements include:
- Fire and sprinkler systems must be tested at least once every 5 years in the presence of a FDNY representative.
- Each component part of the system must be inspected and tested at specified frequencies and such activity must be documented for FDNY review.
- Monthly fire pump testing and inspection.
